Plodding Along

posted in General

It's been a while since I've made an update so I figured it's probably a good idea.

What have I been up to? Well with Guild Wars 2 in a little over 3 weeks I've been trying to find something to fill the void until that time. Those who know me know that I struggle to keep myself occupied most the time to begin with, and really that's the best thing of GW2 being on the horizon!

Gaming wise I've bought/finished Warhammer 40k: Space Marine (more on that later, if I get can be bothered) and am plodding through Blood Bowl as well, although it has begun to reach the area of repetitive. I still have many many many games from over the years that I never played or even opened in some cases, mostly offline FPS's though and I'm just not in the mood for those at the moment.

The one thing I should really be doing with all this downtime is site coding, but alas I just can't find the right state of mind and of course am having those directional issues. Naturally, this is a personal endeavour and so no matter it's direction as long as I am happy with it it doesn't matter at all... but certainly my original intent was a proper gaming website (although if you go back a few years it was intended to be almost a portfolio of stuff I do... trying to write proper reviews of games/albums/films amongst other things - just general info on nothing in particular!). The blog was only ever intended to be a small part of it, but with the way it has been built - blog first - it feels very weird to now switch, especially as I've grown accustomed to having this little spot to rant in! There's no reason the blog must disappear but it would become a small, hidden away area of the site and that seems a bit odd to me given it's current status.

Self-Obsessive Nature of Players

posted in Guild Wars 2

I am noticing a pattern to a particular group of players on the Guild Wars 2 fan forums. As you may have seen I have already expressed my feelings on server stacking and player names in relation to WvW (un-eloquently as it may have been) but now from the same people that sparked those rants, we have another one:

Give us breaks during WvW matchups.

Someone proposed that WvW should stop between matchups so that players can 'have a rest', because they believe that the only way their server can succeed is if they (not the server, them personally) are in WvW at all times. It does not seem to be enough that they are in many cases bringing 10+ large guilds with them to ensure 100% alliance population in WvW, now they want WvW to be shut off during off peak hours.

The same people have requested that WvW points be calculated at a slower rate during off peak times because they think it's unfair players can take them back easier during the night.

WvW player names

posted in Guild Wars 2

So today's heated topic I've been observing is that of the showing of players names in world vs world, people want to have the option to choose whether their name can be seen.

In many ways as long as it's an option what's the problem? Although hiding your name would get you the suspected "What are you afraid of?" comments I would imagine. Partly this would depend entirely on it's implementation, currently we see player names as for example: Augury Rock Invader [FisH]. With the first part being the name of the server, and the second being a guild tag... if this idea were to be implemented, where would your name go? If you replace the server name then it becomes harder to determine who you are under attack from. If you add it to the end, names become obscenely long, underneath then you are beginning to create clutter - and ANet have said on many occasions their desire to keep things easily visible and do away with clutter.

Griefing is a frequent reason for many of Anet's WvW related decisions and I agree with them all. The majority of players see this as a "protect the casual" system, I don't agree that WvW will be at all casual - for me I see it as simply avoiding all the utter assholes who exist out there. The types who's sole purpose of the game seems to be to make your life hell with abuse etc.

Thoughts on Siege Ladders/Towers

posted in Guild Wars 2

I know what you're thinking... What unholy hour is this!? I've never been the greatest sleeper but awake at this time no longer has any perks at all, however this time needs to be passed! So here's my thoughts on a topic I've seen raised many times about Guild Wars 2 and sieges, enjoy!

The Question: Why do we need to break the walls/gate?
This is the question that is being thrown around quite a lot and to an extent I can agree with it. If an objective is completely undefended why would you spend time cracking the fortifications when you could just climb over the wall and get yourself a nice intact keep! The idea of siege ladders/towers also gives melee focused players such as myself something to do other than twiddle your thumbs or tickle a gate. So all in all, it adds other attack points, tactical options and diversity to sieges! Plus, let's be honest, many would argue right now the defenders have it damn easy so this idea is a nice one... but it's certainly not without it's downsides.

Server Stacking Irony

posted in Guild Wars 2

As is a tendency in PvP games people want to be on a winning team, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Again as with most PvP games, people prefer to have allies they can depend on, nothing wrong with that either. But why try and claim it is anything else?

There are several large alliances - each consisting of around 5-10 LARGE guilds - forming for Guild Wars 2, all claiming they wish to roll on an empty server so that the server's can maintain balance. On the whole there are mentions of "strong pvp alliance", "longevity of WvW by spreading the guilds", "not stacking servers" and other such things. Now in a way this is correct, they are spreading the guilds across more than one server and World vs World will have some added longevity as these servers clash. But I see some distinct flaws in the arguments...

Server Stacking
You are still stacking the damned servers. If you want to give some true balance then let's look at how many servers there are? Between all these large guilds there shall be what.. 5? 6? servers taken up. Naturally there shall be 'random'/casual players rolling on them too, meaning either the guilds won't be able to join World v World (and as such will move causing the same issues elsewhere) or the casual's won't. Now I'm sure that latter point isn't an issue for any of these guilds, they despise casual unguilded players to begin with otherwise why would they be so intent on filling the server with other guilds? So the idea of "Not creating stacked servers" is to stack YOUR server with strong guilds? Please... give me a break.

Release Confirmed

posted in Guild Wars 2

ArenaNET have always said that they intended to release Guild Wars 2 "When it's ready", and that would be determined by the feedback taken from the beta's and stress-test's. There has now been two pre-purchase beta weekends (BWE's) and 2 short server stress tests, and it would seem they have made their decision!

Guild Wars 2 will be released on 28th August, 2012. There is also a 3rd and final beta weekend from the 20th-22nd of July for everyone to do those last little important things prior to launch such as determining class choice, character creation and all those little fact finding missions.

For myself and all other pre-purchasers we get a 3 day head start, allowing us to begin on the 25th of August. There is no news yet (that I am aware of) as to how frequently the World vs World match-ups will rotate but it has been speculated based on quotes from the development team, that it will rotate faster for the first few weeks to try and create some early resemblance of server balance.

Guardian vs Warrior Pt. 2

posted in Guild Wars 2

Last night was the 2nd stress test for the beta and I started with the intent to give my Guardian some time in WvWvW so I could try and find an accurate comparison to the Warrior and which fits my play-style better.

My results... well, it's a bit iffy. I went back to my Warrior after around 30 minutes but kept thinking (and saying, much to the other ventrilo users frustration I'm sure!) about how much more useful the Guardian would be in various situations or how different the fight would be if I were the Guardian... but I have decided to stick to my Warrior.

My findings for the Guardian, at least at a low level where there is little gear customization available, is that it is insanely more survivable than the Warrior. My Warrior is constantly diving for the heal button and just trying to stay alive a few seconds longer, my Guardian on the other hand was able to tank multiple camp guards without his health dropping at all. Better passive healing and cleansing I was barely even touching my heal button. Clearly for that I am favouring the Guardian by a LARGE margin, for taking on PvE objectives/content and small groups of players the Guardian just seems to not die.

Shoes on the other foot

posted in Guild Wars 2

Nothing really important here, there's a stress test tonight for GW2 and I'll try and remember to actually write something about it + BWE2 later.

The main point of this post however, is just how amusing it is to see the hypocrisy of all those American gamers.

Every game maintenance/beta ever is timed to American hours (peak for beta's, offpeak for maintenance) and everytime someone in the EU asks for it to be more fairly distributed it's "oh suck it up" etc etc. Todays GW2 stress test is during peak for EU, and work hours for the US.

... so naturally twitter, forums etc are all full of Americans complaining about the timing. Not such a small deal now is it?

I return your comment: Suck it up.

Website

Looking forward

posted in Website

There's been the odd new game, and the old game recently both contributing to slowing my site progress. But most of all it's still that decision making issue that I have. I'm feeling a desire to put more 'bloggy' type stuff recently, which contradicts to what I originally intended the site to be. I can't help but feel the whole thing would've been better had I just made my original intention in one go!

Which brings me onto the site progress, I've done some back-end progress lately (mostly bot tracking) but nothing visible. I'm still toying with different theme's when I get into a coding mood, and I'm thinking that for the full website (rather than blog) I'll do it all in one go rather than gradual additions... or at least, the larger parts will be in one go. I just don't think it'll fit properly if I do it in small parts slowly pushing the blog to the back.

In a way I'm regretting the categorisation and thinking just mass tagging is a better way forward, but too late for that now! Short term plans for the future that will actually affect visitors instead of just me:

World of Tanks

Adrenaline

posted in World of Tanks

This is admittedly, a bit of a bragging post, but one I feel I deserve. I have just played what must be one of most intense games of world of tanks I have ever played, I simply wish I had a video of it. I'll start with how the rest of the night has played out first.

I've been unable to sleep this past night so I've been mostly playing world of tanks, there have been some abysmal teams - and I mean REALLY abysmal. The real memorable games were a crushing defeat on Malinovka in which there was nothing below tier IX in the game but the teams had one major difference; the enemy had five mediums, we had nought but heavies.. which resulted in a rather large massacre due to lack of spotting. Five or six defeats later I had another malinovka game of abysmal teamwork - this time after the usual snipe duel across the field I went to the hill to realise I was alone. I ended up fending off two type-59's, a Panther-II, T-43, VK3601H, IS-3 and T-44 long enough to kill 4 of them and allow my team to cap. As you can imagine by the end of that game my adrenaline was flowing rather.
